The dissertation consists of four separate essays that are woven around a common theme. The first essay (Chapter 2) is a macro-level examination of firms' social networking responses during institutional upheaval, and how these responses influence the level of restructuring initiatives undertaken by the firms. The second essay (Chapter 3) is a qualitative empirical examination of perceptions of work-related values of effective leadership, undertaken within the framework of the culturally-endorsed leadership dimensions offered by the GLOBE Project. The third essay (Chapter 4) is an empirical study of network building behavior of leaders from Post-Soviet countries and how such behavior is affected by contextual and individual factors. Finally, the fourth essay (Chapter 5) is a theoretical paper that develops a conceptual model and propositions for guiding future research in the area of leadership and social networks. It is envisioned that this dissertation will contribute significantly to our understanding of leadership effectiveness and network embeddedness effects in emerging versus developed economies of the world. Specifically, it is hoped that the answers to the research questions addressed in the dissertation will (a) help us better understand the concept of networking in the region, (b) contribute to the cross-cultural leadership literature, (c) fill the void in social network theory literature that has paid limited attention to studying the antecedents to network building behaviors, and (d) to enhance the effectiveness of leadership development endeavors in the Post Soviet countries.The first essay (Chapter 2) is a macro-level examination of firmsa#39; social networking responses during institutional upheaval, and how these responses influence the level of restructuring initiatives undertaken by the firms.
