Circuit protection and switching devices are important components to be considered in the circuit design process. The power cross strap circuit focuses on the design of circuit power protection. The circuit protection is effected by switching to a backup power supply whenever a voltage surge is detected in the primary power supply rails. The design involves analog and digital blocks such as current limiters and voltage monitor respectively. The function of the current limiter circuit is to allow current flow and trigger the circuit to a fold back mode once reaching the set limit value. The main power supply and the backup have individual limiter circuits. Only one of the two limiter circuits is closed at a given time. Whenever there is voltage fluctuation on primary supply rail, the voltage monitor turns OFF the primary limiter and switches ON the backup limiter circuit to provide uninterrupted power supply. The input supply is selected based on the value of select line which is generated by the voltage monitor. The select line signal is generated based on a comparative reference between the input supply and a reference voltage. The design of the circuit is based on the IBM 5AM SiGe BiCMOS process. The circuit is required to operate over temperatures ranging from -180AdC to + 125AdC.The layouts were connected together using higher level metal wires such as metal 2, metal 3 and metal 4. The circuit was bonded out to the bond pad frame. The bond pad frame consists of 13 bond pads with 7 on the right and 6 on the left which ease the connecting problems. ...
